June weather trend in Kathmandu in recent years

June is the second hottest month in Kathmandu after the month of May. This is also the month in which most of the people in Nepal, especially those who work in agriculture field anxiously wait for the rain of fortune - the Monsoon. Early /or delayed or too much /or less monsoon rain change the fate of farmers, and in turn very much affect the economy of Nepal as well as many countries in sub-Indian continent. Predicting timing and intensity of Asian monsoon is still a challenge to science due to lack of proper model for complex geo-structure of the region and insufficient data. Unfortunately, this year, the monsoon was late as well as weak with little monsoon active in Kathmandu and central region of Nepal.

This year, the monthly average temperature was almost in par with the monthly average for past seven years (viz. 30.1°C). The average maximum temperature for the month was 30.5°C, which is 1.5°C higher than the monthly average for the month for last 30 years (viz. 29°C). Similarly, the average minimum was 20.1°C which was also higher than the average monthly minimum temperature for past 30 years and recent 7 years, 19°C and 19.4°C respectively. The temperature trend also shows that in recent years, number of days with tropical nights in June in Kathmandu (min temp above 20°C) is in increasing trend.

The month of June in year 2010 and 2012 were the hottest Junes in recent years, with average maximum temperature at 31.1° and 31.2°C respectively. In terms of hot days, June 2010 registered 24days, and June 2012 & 2014 - 21days with daily maximum temperature above 30°C. Whereas June 2008 saw only 9 days with temperature above 30°C and average max temperature was 29.3°C, which was still above the 30 years average monthly max. June 13th 2012 was the record hottest June day with maximum temperature of 35.2°, whereas June 10th 2009 registered the lowest temperature of 15.8°C. Similarly, June 18th 2013 was the coolest day, on which the mercury did not cross the 22.6°C mark.

Average monthly rainfall in Kathmandu in June is 236.3mm. The maximum 24 hours rainfall recorded in June was 100.5mm in June 29, 1980. However, the average rainfall in past 7 years is slightly below the 30 years' average, which stands at approx 225mm. 2009 June received less than 50% of the monthly rainfall, with just 121.7mm, similarly, 2010 and 2012 Junes also received less rainfalls (145.1mm and 137.8mm respectively). Whereas, June last year received maximum amount of rainfall amounting to 366.3mm. 2012 June saw the longest dry period with no rain in Kathmandu for 9 consecutive days. Monthly rainfall in June 2014 was 198.7mm, which is below the average rainfall for the month in past 30 years, as well as in recent years. Longest dry period in 2014 June was 5 days.

Nepali New Year 2071: Nepali Calendar

Bikram Sambat and Nepali Calendar

Nepal is one of the rare nations that rejoices multiple new years in a single year because of various ethnic people living together in one small country. Among them Bikram Sambat, BS (or Vikram Sambar) is among the few that is recognized as the official calendar of the nation.

Bikram Sambat (calendar) starts on the 1st of Baisakh, which falls around the mid of month of April in Gregorian calendar. The calendar which is approx 56.7 years ahead of Gregorian calendar is luni-solar calendar, viz. it uses lunar months (names) and solar sidereal year (number of days).
